Rejoiner Getting Ready to Lurk
By Nadine Holder
May 2006
Hello, I am Nadine and I am getting ready to lurk. I loved Janis Dodson’s article in the April BoMB and it gave me a great deal of heart. I too am a shy person and am scared silly of “groups” and “group” meetings. I live quietly in the country with my three dogs and two cats and rarely go where the people are, so am getting ready to lurk.
I want to publicly thank Joanna Soper and Donne Puckle for their help in getting my previous Mensa membership unearthed by the national organization. I joined Mensa in 1968 and was a member for about 15 years in San Diego, California. I dropped out from lack of interest in the “group” activities as explained above. It just didn’t seem worthwhile to keep paying dues.
In 1999 I retook the Mensa exam here in Sierra Vista, mainly to see if my brain had atrophied due to, ahem, advancing age. It had not - it only seemed that way when I did dumb things. When I think about it I have actually done a lot of dumb things throughout my life so it has nothing to do with advancing age. I had an 18 year career as an engineer in the nuclear power industry in San Diego and when nuclear power development sort of ground to a halt went to work as a plan review specialist for the City of San Diego Building Inspection Department. With a great deal of relief I retired to Sierra Vista in 1992 - loved the quiet life in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet.
I could not ever seem to get an answer out of the national Mensa office about rejoining (they say they filter spam pretty harshly and never got my emails.) With the help of Joanna and Donne they finally tracked down my records and reinstated me. So here I am, getting ready to lurk.
